Diabetes Diet Guidelines

Advertisements

There has been a great controversy with regards to the diet that should be recommended for diabetics. Furthermore, diabetics start wandering here and there in hunt of the proper diet that should be taken by them. This piece of writing will focus on the contemporary guidelines with respect to a diabetic diet.

Firstly, it must be known that no matter if a person is a recently diagnosed diabetic or has diabetes diagnosed since 10 years, he may need to have a consultation with a dietician. This is because the dietician is a person who reviews your B.M.I, sugar level and lifestyle and suggests you a diet accordingly.

Coming onto the guidelines for Diabetes diet, the best guidelines are provided by the American Diabetes Association. To begin with, you should have an idea about the foods that are recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The association recommends that you consume healthy vegetables and fruits. Healthy vegetables are the non-starchy ones such as spinach, carrot, broccoli or green beans with meals. In foods, you should select wholegrain foods over the processed grain food items. This is because processed grain food items are just offering you free calories and doing nothing good to your body. Here, ADA suggests that you try brown rice or whole wheat spaghetti with your favorite sauces. With this, you may also add dried beans like the pinto or kidney beans into the main course meals.

ADA recommends fish to be included 2 – 3 times a week in the diet, and lean meat can be eaten, but in such a way that you consume the cuts of beef and remove the skin from turkey or chicken when you consume it.

Diabetics usually face a problem when it comes to consume dairy products. This is because dairy products may contain a lot of sugar in them. This fact calls for the need of choosing those products that are non-fat in nature. When this is the case, dairy products such as skimmed milk, non-fat yoghurt and non fat cheese can be chosen. Along with this, ADA recommends that you significantly cut back high calorie snack foods such as chips and French fries and desserts like cookies, cakes and full fat ice-cream.

In liquids, you should increase the intake of water and try to consume calorie-free soft drinks rather than the regular soda, fruit punch, sugar sweetened drinks and sweet tea.

Also, the food that requires oil for cooking should be cooked in un-saturated liquid oil, such as olive or canola oil. You should avoid food that is high in saturated and trans-fats oils. However, you must also remember that over-eating even all of the above mentioned healthy foods can lead to rapid weight gain.

It is the era of evidence-based-medicine. Therefore, rather than searching for the low diabetic diets on the internet, you should rely on the American Diabetes Association’s recommendations that are mentioned above. You can definitely make a great variety of foods from these items in order to satisfy your appetite!
