Is Diabetes Curable?

As suggested by the
recent data, there is no cure that can REVERSE diabetes once when a
person is confidently diagnosed having the disease. However, it must be
mentioned that proper management of diabetes can retard the acceleration
of diabetes to a treacherous level. Several goals are set for a diabetic
person and he/she is required to keep a strict control over them. Let us
have a brief review.
Various clinical
practice guidelines released nationally and internationally suggest that
there are three main targets that are needed to be achieved by a
diabetic in order to prolong the development of diabetic complications.
These three targets are:
Keeping the HbA1C
level
of 6.0 – 7.0%
Pre-prandial blood
glucose levels from 4 – 6 mmol/L or (72 to 108 mg/dl)
2 hour post-prandial
blood glucose level from 5.0 to 8.0 mmol/L (90 to 144 mg/dl)
All these three
targets can be achieved with a proper lifestyle modification which
consists of a proper diabetic diet, regular use of medications and
insulin (when prescribed by the physician).
Diabetes is basically
a disease that involves the micro-vessels. These micro-vessels may be of
any organ but most commonly involve kidneys, heart, eyes, and brain.
Poorly controlled diabetes may lead to development of complications in
these organs and sometimes, the gangrene of feet.
This explains why
whenever a person is diagnosed of diabetes, he/she is provided a group
of measures that he/she may take. They are not the cure of diabetes per
se, but they may make a person slow down the process of progression of
diabetes to advanced complications. One of these measures as mentioned
above is keeping excellent control of sugar levels. If a person keeps
sugar levels in strict control, that person can just be like a normal
person.
Since diabetes
involves increased blood sugar levels, the strict control on diet may
alone be of a lion’s share to provide a good control on the sugar level.
A diet which is high in dietary fiber, low in saturated fats, have
vegetables, whole grains and one fruit per day with the strict
moderation on alcohol is considered to be proper diabetic diet. Along
with these, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is extremely
necessary.
In control of
diabetes, exercise is considered to have an excellent effect. This is
because exercise makes the muscles of body to utilize glucose thereby
the excess glucose in blood is utilized off. Secondly, exercise retards
symptoms of diabetes to a very later age and person may be living the
life like that of his/her normal counterpart.
To conclude,
diagnosed diabetes has NO cure. If there is any possible cure of
diabetes, then the cure is control. The control may be with respect to
the blood sugar levels, diet and being regular on the medicinal intake.
Remember always, the more you ‘control’ diabetes, the more you control
yourself from entering the stage of diabetic complications. Therefore,
if you are a diabetic and reading this article, you should start control
just like the above mentioned ways.
