Diabetes is an
illness that affects millions of people all over the world. The patients
include both men and women, and can range from adolescents to senior
citizens. It is a chronic disease and unfortunately, it is one that is
increasing day by day. Every day, many new cases of diabetes are
reported all over the world.
Diabetes is a disease
in which the body is unable to produce insulin, or is unable to utilize
the insulin being produced in the body. Insulin is a hormone which is
produced in the body and it is used to control the blood sugar levels in
the body. In diabetic patients, insulin is not being produced enough or
is not being properly used to regulate the glucose levels in the blood.
If insulin is not being produced in the body, it is known as Type 1
diabetes, and if it is not being used properly, then it is called Type 2
diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic
disease which means that there is no complete cure for this. Diabetics
usually have to suffer from this disease throughout their lives. There
are medications which can control sugar levels, and many people also get
insulin shots, but these are only ways to control diabetes and not cure
it. Most patients have to rely on insulin shots after regular intervals
throughout their lives. This is necessary because if the blood sugar
levels reach high levels, it can be very dangerous for the patient.
Therefore, patients often have to be on controlled diets and medication
for the most part.
Diabetes shows a
number of symptoms which can help patients in knowing that they might
have this disease. It is important to keep an eye out for symptoms
because if you catch this disease early on, it is much easier to
control. If you are too late, then there might already be too much
damage done to your vital organs, as diabetes affects all parts of your
body.
One of the common
symptoms is frequent urination, often at night time. Moreover, diabetics
also experience frequent thirst and hunger which is why then frequent
urination is experienced as a result. Another common symptom is swelling
of the hands and feet, and water retention. It is also seen that wounds
take much longer to heal on diabetic patients.
Diabetes can be a
dangerous disease because it affects many vital organs of the body. Many
patients can suffer from kidney failure later on their life, and many
also develop heart problems. Also, diabetes can lead to poor eyesight.
Therefore, it is important to take care of your diet because that is the
best way to control your blood sugar levels. Also, take your medication
regularly and also take insulin shots if they are required.
There are also many
new medications which claim to reverse the effects of diabetes so you
can also discuss that with your doctor. Combined with a good diet and
exercise program, these new drugs can really be useful.
